The marabou gives the bait natural movement in current and unlike other crayfish flies on the market, it is uniquely designed with an up swept hook to minimize bottom snags.
I have used this bait for a couple of years now and caught many smallmouth bass and a few large brown trout on this bait from the Ozark Streams that I fish. I remember the first outing using this bait.
“The moment I waded into the stream I could see baitfish on the far size of the stream exploding out of the water trying to escape the jaws of a predator. I had arrived at the perfect time and was witnessing a feeding frenzy. My first cast landed in a swift riffle above the commotion. The bait quickly fell to the gravel stream bottom and my fly line swung the bait into the deep blue swirl below the riffle. My line immediately went taut and I instinctively set the hook on a good fish. The fish used his body and primal strength to strip line from my 9 foot 6wt rod well into my backing. The strong current of the stream made it impossible for me to gain line in this battle. Wading down below the area of heavy current, I guided the fish into calmer water and landed a nice 16” smallmouth bass. After snapping a photo and removing the hook, I sent him on his way to fight another day. I immediately repeated this event 4 more times and caught 5 fish all over 14 inches long in the first 5 cast with the largest being an 18 ½” toad".
I remember that moment every time I tie this bait.
After you tie a few of these baits and use this bait in your home waters, you will have the knowledge of how the pattern works and should inspect the crayfish in your home waters for color and size. This will allow you to purchase materials in the colors and size needed to best match the bait the bass desire. Be creative and enjoy.
