SEE PHOTOGRAPH/S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! GOOD CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!! This auction is for a superb large size quality vintage hardback FIRST EDITION (First impression of the First Edition) entitled “The Railway Station,” subtitled “An Architectural History,” by Carroll L. V. Meeks, lavishly illustrated with TWO-HUNDRED THIRTY-SEVEN wonderful vintage photographic and engraved illustrations, drawings and plans. It was published by The Architectural Press, of London, in 1957 and is the FIRST BRITISH EDITION. A fascinating study of the architecture of the Western world since 1800 as revealed by a single type of building - the passenger railroad station. These type of buildings were especially representative of the new problems of design posed by the Industrial Revolution. The contents include: · The Nineteenth Century Style: Picturesque Eclecticism · Functional Pioneering (1830-1845) · Standardization (1850s) · The Middle Phase: Sophistication (1860-1890) · The Third Phase: Megalomania (1890-1914) · The Twentieth Century Style (1914-1956) The book measures 10.75 inches x 8 inches. The 203 pages are used but neat. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages (the lining paper is peeling at the hinge inside the front cover and at the hinge between the two blank pages at the rear, exposing the binding cloth under, but all is secure). The book is a former vintage library book with the usual stamps and stickers to the end papers. The original red cloth hardback cover is sound, with wear around the ends of the faded spine and corners and is grubby (old tape residue marks to the rear board). The gold on the spine is dull. A good reading copy of this lavishly illustrated vintage FIRST EDITION – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder. I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
