SEE PHOTOGRAPH/S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! FAIR to POOR CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!! This auction is for a superb vintage hardback edition entitled “Flint and Feather,” subtitled “The Complete Poems,” by E. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake), with an introduction by Theodore Watts-Dunton and a biographical sketch of the author, illustrated by J. R. Seavey, with EIGHT wonderful vintage illustrations. It was published by The Musson Book Co., Limited, of Toronto and London, in 1920. Emily Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake) (1861-1913) commonly known as E. Pauline Johnson, was a Canadian writer and performer. She was born in Chiefswood, the family home built by her father (a Mohawk) on the Six Nations Indian Reserve outside of Brantford, Ontario and died in Vancouver, British Columbia. Pauline Johnson is often remembered for her poems that celebrate her aboriginal heritage. One such poem is the frequently anthologized “The Song My Paddle Sings,” which is included in this book. Mohawk = People of the Flint. E. Pauline Johnson, who was arguably the best-known female North American Indian writer of the first half of the 20th century. The contents include: · Biographical Sketch of the Author · The White Wampum o Ojistoh o The Song My Paddle Sings o The Flight of the Crows o Moonset o Shadow River o The Happy Hunting Grounds …and much more… · Canadian Born o Lady Lorgnette o The Mariner o Lullaby of the Iroquois o The Riders of the Plains o Fire-Flowers o Lady Icicle o The Legend of Qu’appelle Valley …and much more… · Miscellaneous Poems o Brandon o The Indian Corn Planter o The Cattle Country o Autumn’s Orchestra o The Trail to Lillooet o The Lost Lagoon o The King’s Consort o Calgary of the Plains o The Ballad of the Yaada …and much more… The book measures 9 inches x 6 inches. The 166 pages are hand-cut to the rims, are used but generally neat (the frontispiece is detached and tatty at the side and there are one or two creased corners and a few grubby marks) and a little faded with age. The binding is fragile with no missing pages (the lining paper is split at the hinge inside the covers, the covers are peeling away from the main body of the binding, the frontispiece is loose and the binding feels generally loose). There are several little “x” markings on the contents pages and minor pencil markings in the text. The original cloth hardback cover is sound, with heavy wear mostly around the spine and corners (frayed to the ends and to the corners) and is grubby. The gold on the front board and spine is dull.
