GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!!
This auction is for a superb vintage hardback FIRST EDITION (First impression of the First Edition) entitled “The Stubborn Structure,” subtitled “Essays on Criticism and Society,” by Northorpe Frye.
It was published by Methuen Co., Ltd., of Essex Street, London, in 1970, and is the FIRST EDITION (stated).
Herman Northrop Frye (1912-1991), a Canadian, born in Quebec, was one of the most distinguished literary critics and literary theorists of the twentieth century.
This book contains a collection of lectures and articles examining the theory and practice of criticism.
The contents include:
· Contexts
o The Instruments of Mental Production
o The Knowledge of Good and Evil
o Speculation and Concern
o Design as a Creative Principle in the Arts
o On Value-Judgements
o Criticism, Visible and invisible
o Elementary Teaching and Elemental Scholarship
· Applications
o Varieties of Literary Utopias
o The Revelation to Eve
o The Road to Excess
o The Keys to the Gates
o The Drunken Boat: The Revolutionary Element in Romanticism
o Dickens and the Comedy of Humours
o The Problem of Spiritual Authority in the Nineteenth Century
o The Top of the Tower: A Study of the Imagery of Yeats
o Conclusion to a Literary History of Canada
The book measures 8.75 inches x 5.75 inches.
The 316 pages are nice and neat and a little faded with age, with light foxing near the covers/rims. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. Apart from a previous owner’s name at the front, there are no other ink or pencil markings in the book.
The original cloth hardback cover is in good condition for its age, with minor wear, bumps and is a little grubby/faded, having been largely protected by the (now torn/tatty) illustrated dust-jacket. The gold on the spine is very good.
A fascinating vintage FIRST EDITION – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder.
I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
