This auction is for a superb hardback FIRST EDITION (First impression of the First Edition) entitled “The Confessions of Aubrey Beardsley,” by Donald S. Olson, with TWENTY-ONE wonderful photographic illustrations, drawings by Aubrey Beardsley, and Beardsley style chapter letter header decorations.
It was published by Bantam Press, of London, in 1993 and is the FIRST BRITISH EDITION. The book includes a loose errata sheet.
Aubrey Beardsley was a controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, known best for his dark and perverse images and the grotesque erotica. He died of tuberculosis aged just 25.
Based on five years of research, Donald S. Olson portrays Aubrey Beardsley’s life from infancy to his death at the early age of twenty-five, a victim of tuberculosis. The Confessions of Aubrey Beardsley weaves fictional incidents into the biographical facts of Beardsley’s life to present a powerful portrait of a modern artist who challenged the hypocrisies of Victorian England.
The book measures 9.25 inches x 6.25 inches.
The 422 pages are neat. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages (the blank page inside the front cover has been cut out). The book is a former vintage library book with the usual stamps (including “withdrawn” on the half-title page).
The book has been professionally rebound by the library in plain blue mock-leather hardback. The hardback cover is in good condition for its age, having been largely protected by the dust-jacket. The illustrated dust-jacket is in very good condition for its age, with minor wear and has not been price-clipped.
A good reading copy of this wonderfully illustrated FIRST EDITION – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder.
