GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!!
This auction is for a superb vintage hardback COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET entitled “The Portrait of a Lady,” by American novelist, critic, and traveller Henry James (1811-1882).
The set was published by Macmillan Co., Limited, of London, in 1928.
Henry James (1811-1882), became a British subject in 1915, after forty years in England, and was awarded the Order of merit for his contribution to literature (the only other write besides Thomas Hardy to have been similarly honoured in his time).
Originally published as a serial in “The Atlantic Monthly” and “Macmillan's Magazine” in 1880-1881 and, then, as a book in 1881, “The Portrait of a Lady” is regarded as the masterpiece of his early phase of writing - dealing with personal freedom, responsibility, betrayal and sexuality. The basis for the 1996 film adaptation directed Jane Campion and starring Nicole Kidman, Barbara Hershey, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and others.
This moving story centres on Isabel Archer, an attractive American woman, whose circumstances have brought her to Europe. Isabel refuses the offer of marriage to an English peer and to a bulldog-like New Englander, to fall victim to a worthless and spiteful man, who marries her for her fortune and ruins her life.
The books measure 7 inches 4.5 inches.
The 378 and 382 pages are nice and neat and a little faded with age, with light foxing near the covers/rims. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. There are light pencil notes/markings in the text and notes on the blank page at the back of Volume I. There are NO inscriptions and NO other ink or pencil markings in Volume II.
The original cloth hardback covers are in good condition for their age, with minor wear (a small split to the top of the spine of Vol I) and are a little grubby/blemished. The gold on the decorative spines and front boards is very good.
A wonderful vintage COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder.
I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
