Hardcover, published by D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1879, original Copyright 1878. Measures approximately 5 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 382 pages.
Book is in overall acceptable condition. Deep forest green boards with dark bronze color Victorian style illustration; spine has gold gilt lettering with fish and meat illustrations. Boards have scuff marks/staining, scraping, and edge tattering. Pages have age discoloration/yellowing, creasing, and some minor edge tearing. Handsome dark tan endpapers. Spine is somewhat loose with binding material exposed with some tearing at inside margins on endpapers. Vintage semi-rough cut side outside page edging; some scuff marks/staining/scratching on outside page edging, there may have been colored edging that has flaked/faded.
Contains lessons in the preparation of food and includes “superior merits as a cookbook to be consulted in the ordinary way". Includes instructions on how to clean a stove, common cooking processes, entrees (such as: curry, quenelles of veal, braised fillets of beef, Chaudfroid of chicken, Irish stew, haricot mutton, curried rabbit), stews, tripe, meat, poultry, soups, fish, vegetables, sauces, pastry, puddings, dumplings, jellies, cakes, souffles, etc. Includes sick-room cookery and diet in health and disease.
