SEE PHOTOGRAPH/S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! GOOD CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!! This auction is for a superb vintage hardback edition entitled “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus,” by Ludwig Wittgenstein, with an introduction by Bertrand Russell. The original German text is printed side-by-side with the English translation on the facing page. Bertrand Russell’s introduction is in English. It was published by Routledge Kegan Paul Ltd., of London, in 1949. Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), considered by many to be the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century, worked primarily in the foundations of logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language. “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus” was the book-length work he published during his lifetime. This classic work comprises a system of short, oracular statements, numbered 1, 1.1, 1.11, 1.12, etc., through to 7, intended to be such that 1.1 is a comment on or elaboration of 1, 1.11 and 1.12 comments on 1.1, and so on. It is an ambitious project to identify the relationship between language and reality and to define the limits of philosophy by articulating “…in the part of his theory which deals with Symbolism …the conditions which would have to be fulfilled by a logically perfect language” (from the first page of Bertrand Russell’s Introduction) The book measures 8.75 inches x 5.5 inches. The 189 pages are used but neat and a little faded with age. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. There are markings in the text on a few pages, but all is fully readable. The original cloth hardback cover is in very good condition for its age, with minor wear and is a little grubby. The gold on the spine is very good. A wonderful vintage edition – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder. I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
