SEE PHOTOGRAPH/S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! VERY GOOD CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!! This auction is for a superb vintage hardback edition entitled “The Notebook of Malte Laurids Brigge,” by Rainer Maria Rilke, translated into English by John Linton. It was published by The Hogarth Press, of London, in 1978. Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) was born in Prague and is considered to be one of the German language's greatest 20th century poets. His haunting images focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety. These themes positioned him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the Modernist poets. The Notebook of Malte Laurids Brigge is generally accepted as Rilke’s most important prose work. It is auto-biographical fiction, for Rilke thinly veils his own experiences under a romantic record of the memories, impressions and vicissitudes of an impoverished Danish poet living in Paris. “Reading Malte was, and still is, like embarking on a journey into the secrets of language” – Professor Rudiger Gorner The book measures 8 inches x 5.25 inches. The 243 pages are nice and neat. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. There are NO inscriptions and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The original hardback cover is in very good condition for its age, having been largely protected by the dust-jacket. The dust-jacket is in good condition for its age, with wear and chipped/small tears to the top rim, is a little grubby/faded and has not been price-clipped. The gold on the spine is very good. A wonderful vintage edition – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder. I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
