SEE PHOTOGRAPH/S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! GOOD to FAIR CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!! This auction is for a superb vintage hardback FIRST EDITION (First impression of the First Edition) entitled “Selected Works,” subtitled “Volume I Prose,” by Rainer Maria Rilke, translated into English by G. Craig Houston, with an Introduction by J. B. Leishman. It was published by The Hogarth Press, of London, in 1954 and is the FIRST EDITION in this English translation and selection. Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) was born in Prague and is considered to be one of the German language's greatest 20th century poets. His haunting images focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety. These themes positioned him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the Modernist poets. He wrote in both verse and prose and his two most famous verse sequences were “The Sonnets to Orpheus” and “The Duino Elegies”. This book consists of a selection of his greatest prose works. The contents are: · Introduction by J. B. Leishman · Concerning Landscape · Worpswede · From the Dream-Book · An Encounter · An Experience · Note-Book Entry · Memory · Some Reflections on Dolls · Primal Sound · The Young Poet · Concerning the Poet · The Young Workman’s Letter · The Lay of the Love and Death of Cornet Christoph Rilke · The Rodin Book The book measures 8.75 inches x 5.75 inches. The 160 pages are neat and a little faded with age. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. The book is a former vintage library book with the usual stamps and stickers to the end papers and “withdrawn” at the rear of the title page, and there is a previous owner’s signature at the front. The original cloth hardback cover is in good condition for its age – sound, with heavy wear to the ends of the spine (frayed) and is grubby/faded. There are gilt library stamps on the front board and spine. The original gold on the spine is dull. A good reading copy of this vintage FIRST EDITION – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder. I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
