EXCELLENT CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!!
This auction is for a superb edition entitled “A Journey to the End of the Russian Empire,” by Anton Chekhov, translated into English by Rosamund Bartlett, Anthony Phillips, Luba Terpak and Michael Terpak, with endpaper maps.
It was published by Penguin Books Ltd., of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, in 2007 and is one of the wonderful “Penguin Great Journeys” series, No. 15.
The Bleak Siberian Wilderness, 1890
The ship had run aground. But by lucky chance the Herald was also stranded – with a band on board, so there was an excellent party. This was the high point of Chekhov’s great journey through Russia’s wilderness. He was to share a cabin with an opium smoking Chinese man, learn why Japanese ladies were famed for their sexual prowess and witness vicious punishments in the desolate wasteland of Russia’s penal colony.
In 1890, Chekhov undertook an arduous journey by train, horse-drawn carriage, and river steamer to the far east of Russia and the katorga, or penal colony, on Sakhalin Island. The island is north of Japan but is part of Russia.
The contents are:
· Letters from the Eastern Empire
· Sakhalin Island
o Across the Tartar Straight
o The Prison Settlements of northern Sakhalin
o The Gilyak Tribe
o The Morality of Sakhalin
The book measures 7.25 inches x 4.5 inches.
The 111 pages are nice and neat. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. There are NO inscriptions and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The illustrated softback cover is in very good condition.
A wonderful edition – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder.
I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
Please click on “View Sellers Other Auctions” towards the top of this page for (mostly) vintage editions.
