SEE PHOTOGRAPH/S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! GOOD CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!! This auction is for a superb vintage hardback FIRST EDITION (First impression of the First Edition) entitled “The Book of the Thousand and One Nights,” subtitled “A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights’ Entertainments,” by Sir Richard Burton, a selection by P. H. Newby, with numerous wonderful illustrations by W. M. Cuthill. It was published by Arthur Barker Ltd., of London, in 1950, and is the FIRST EDITION (stated) in this selection. Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) is best known as an explorer and for his translations of such works of Eastern erotica as “The Arabian Nights” and “The Kama Sutra”, he was in the vanguard of that age of individual exploration which saw such figures as David Livingstone and Henry Stanley march into darkest Africa with the force of empire in their wake. In 1842 he joined the service of the East India Company and, while stationed in India, acquired a thorough knowledge of the Persian, Afghan, Hindustani, and Arabic languages. In 1853, in various disguises, he made a famous journey to Mecca and Medina, about which he wrote the vivid Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah. With John Hanning Speke he went to uncharted East Central Africa to discover the source of the Nile; he found Lake Tanganyika (1858) but abandoned the attempt to reach Lake Nyasa. The contents include: · Tale of the Fisherman and the Jinni · The Tale of the Ensorcelled Prince · The Tale of the Birds and Beasts and the Carpenter · The Ebony House · The Simpleton and the Sharper · Sindbad the Seaman and Sindbad the Landsman (1st to 5th voyages) · Khalifah the Fisherman of Baghdad ...and more... The book measures 8.75 inches x 6 inches. The 381 pages are nice and neat. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. Apart from a previous owner’s signature at the front, there are no other ink or pencil markings in the book. The original cloth hardback cover is in very good condition for its age, with minor wear. The gold on the faded spine is very good for its age. A wonderful vintage FIRST EDITION – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder. I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
