Skinner, one of the nations leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, today announced the results of its recent Asian Works of Art sale, which grossed $3,722,862.00. The auction, which was held on April 26th in the Boston gallery, represents the most successful sale to date for that specialty area at Skinner and is the 5th most successful auction in the companys history.
High prices were realized across the board, with the auction boasting an impressive sell rate of a 94%. Unlike previous sales, most of the buying came from bidders in the room, not from phones or the internet. A large amount of foreign buyers were present, including a considerable number of Europeans, in part the result of a finely-focused strategy of advertising in European antique publications.
According to James Callahan, director, Asian Works of Art, The demand for Asian Art –especially contemporary works – continues to be strong, coming from collectors as far reaching as the pieces themselves. Callahan continued, And, we dont seem the trend waning; its likely the next auction will generate even greater interest.
The top selling lot was a pale celadon carved jade figure (lot 461) from 18th/19th century China, which sold for $358,000. Jade carvings were hotly contested, accounting for 9 of the top 10 lots sold. Other jade highlights included: a jade carving of a reclining cat (lot 479) – $213,300; a jade censer carved in the shape of a foo dog (lot 480) – $189,600; a rectangular jade screen (lot 455) – $130,350; a jade ewer with foo dogs (lot 477) – $112,575; a jade vase ornately carved with dragons, pearls, flowers, bats and small children (lot 454) – $106,650; and a jade disc in the Pi ritual shape (lot 458) – $106,650.
Also exceeding the $100K sale price was an exquisite pair of Chinese snuff bottles, Chia Ching four-character mark in red and of the period, featuring famille rose designs of the Immortals (lot 174), which brought in $100,725.00.

Domestic
For shipping within the USA we normally use USPS Priority Mail flat rate at $5.50 USD for one catalog. With two catalogs being shipped we'll try to fit into one USPS Priority Flat Rate envelope at $6.00 USD.
On multiple purchases (i.e. two or more catalogs) we default to USPS combined media mail as the best available rate.
If the catalog is oversized(FYI the oversized catalogs will not fit into a P.M. envelope) or upon request USPS media mail shipment on a normal size catalog starts at $4.00 USD within the USA.
International
For the majority of our international customers on one normal size catalog shipment we will use USPS Priority Flat Rate at $12.00 USD (depending on availability to your country). Canada shipping is $10.00 via USPS Priority serivce. Please note: If the catalog is oversized we cannot use Priority Mail Flate-rate but other options are available.
For two catalog shipments we can sometimes combine both catalogs into one Priority mail envelope at $12.50 USD, but check with us first to make sure that both catalogs do not exceed 4 U.S. pound weight limit or are oversized.
A great feature that is now available is Priority Mail Flate-rate Box which means we can put up to 20 pounds in weight of catalogs or roughly 7-10 catalogs (depending on the size of the catalogs) into one box for $42.00 to most international countries and to Canada Mexico is only $28.00.
If your country does not have USPS Priority availability we will default to USPS Air Letter or USPS Air Parcel service on multiple catalog orders. FYI oversized catalogs will not fit into a Priority Flate-rate envelope and default to Air Parcel or Letter.
Insurance:
When available we will make insurance optional for you to choose for any loss on damage in transit through the USPS system.
Auction Catalogs Online is not liable on any non-insured shipments for any loss or damage through USPS.
Payment method:
When making payments by PayPal, Money Order, Cashiers Check will send out ASAP. Personal checks will send out as soon as check clears.
