This auction is for a superb vintage hardback edition entitled “Candide and Other Tales,” by Voltaire, translated into English by Tobias Smollett, revised by James Thornton, with an introduction and appreciation by Christine North, and TWENTY-FIVE wonderful vintage illustrations, including a frontispiece drawing of Voltaire by Huber.
It was published by arrangement with J. M. Dent Sons Ltd., of London, and distributed by Heron Books, in 1969.
Voltaire was the pen name of Francois-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), a French Enlightenment writer, philosopher, and essayist known for his wit, his defence of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and his philosophical sport.
He wrote a considerable number of books during his eighty-four years of life. But it is his masterpiece “Candide” above all his many works, which has kept his memory alive and has been one of the enduring classics of western civilization. It was written, largely as an attack on the fanatical intolerance of eighteenth century France and remains a biting satire, of both timeless and timely in its thought.

The book measures 8 inches x 5 inches.
The 389 pages are nice and neat and a little faded with age. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages.
There are NO inscriptions and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.
The original decorative embossed hardback cover with original decorative endpapers is sound (the spine has surface splits along the sides, but is still secure). The gold on the front board and spine is very good.
A good reading copy of this wonderfully illustrated vintage edition – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder.
