This auction is for a superb vintage hardback FIRST EDITION (First impression of the First Edition) entitled “The Story of Philosophy,” by Will Durant.
It was published by Ernest Benn Limited, of London, in 1946 (date of foreword), and is the FIRST BRITISH EDITION.
William James Durant (1885-1981) was an American philosopher, historian, and writer. He is best known for writing, with his wife, Ariel Durant, The Story of Civilization, an 11-volume work written between 1935 and 1975.
In 1967 they were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for literature and in 1977, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
In this classic work the author shows the interconnection of the ideas of the great Western philosophers through the ages and how one philosopher’s ideas informed the next.

The book measures 8.75 inches 5.75 inches x 1.25 inches.
The 471 pages are nice and neat and a little faded with age (heavier near the covers), with light foxing near the covers/rims. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. Apart from a previous owner’s name at the front, there are no other ink or pencil markings in the book.
The original cloth hardback cover is in good condition for its age, with wear (split/frayed corners), bumps and is a little grubby/faded. The gold on the spine is good.
A wonderful vintage FIRST EDITION – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder.
